Specialist inpatient claims — our defined service

DEVZ focuses exclusively on specialist inpatient work. Eligible admitted private-patient claims can involve Medicare, private insurers, ECLIPSE, gap arrangements, eligibility, hospital details and reconciliation. Consulting-room, general-practice and outpatient billing are not part of our administrative service.

Australia-wide online-only service: specialists in major markets including Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, the Gold Coast, Newcastle and Hobart can work with DEVZ remotely. Explore all supported online specialist markets.

Core billing models in Australia

Bulk billing

Bulk billing is a Medicare payment arrangement. The patient assigns the Medicare benefit to the provider as full payment for the eligible Medicare service and has no out-of-pocket cost for that service. Bulk billing can be used for eligible outpatient services and can also apply in hospital settings for private patients where Medicare rules permit it. Read our specialist bulk-billing guide.

Private and gap billing

A doctor may set a fee above the Medicare benefit. In outpatient care, the patient may pay the difference. In private inpatient care, Medicare and the patient's private health insurer may both contribute, with no-gap or known-gap arrangements potentially changing the patient's out-of-pocket amount.

Informed financial consent

Before private treatment, patients should understand expected fees and likely out-of-pocket costs. See our informed financial consent guide.

Inpatient vs outpatient medical billing

Inpatient medical billing concerns services provided to admitted patients. Outpatient medical billing includes specialist rooms and other out-of-hospital services. The setting and the payment method are separate concepts: an inpatient or outpatient service may be privately billed or, when eligible, bulk billed.

Private inpatient claims: Medicare and health funds

For eligible in-hospital doctor and specialist services, the Australian Government states Medicare covers 75% of the MBS fee and private health insurance covers at least 25%. The doctor's actual fee can be higher than the MBS fee, which can create a gap. Medicare vs private health fund billing.

ECLIPSE and Simplified Billing

Services Australia uses ECLIPSE for inpatient medical claims, Simplified Billing, patient claims, verification and eligibility checking. DEVZ uses its own Medicare- and ECLIPSE-compliant software. Explore ECLIPSE medical billing.

Public patient vs private patient hospital billing

Public and private patient status changes the billing pathway. Public patients in public hospitals are treated under public funding arrangements, while eligible private inpatient medical services can involve Medicare and private health insurance. Public vs private patient hospital billing.

Medical billing for new doctors

A new specialist may not need or be able to justify a full-time billing staff member. DEVZ can assist with authorised inpatient billing while the practice retains outpatient accounts, reception and patient-management workflows. Medical billing for new doctors.

Our billing model

DEVZ uses its own secure billing software rather than remotely logging into a doctor's practice-management system. Medicare and health fund payments go directly to the practitioner's nominated account. DEVZ does not receive, hold or pool the doctor's medical income.

Frequently asked questions

Does DEVZ provide outpatient billing?

No. Our current service provides specialist inpatient medical billing only, not outpatient or rooms billing.

Can bulk billing be inpatient?

Yes. Bulk billing is a Medicare payment arrangement and can apply to eligible services in hospital settings for private patients where Medicare rules permit it.

Why does DEVZ focus on inpatient billing?

Private inpatient billing can involve Medicare, private health insurers, ECLIPSE, gap arrangements, patient eligibility and more complex reconciliation. That specialist administrative work is our core focus.
